The Catholic Church has the fullness of divine revelation and divine authority to judge the personal and social obligations of mankind through Christ’s command to Peter.
Protestants, who have no wish to subject themselves to Catholic discipline, often resent Catholic teaching authority. Some have coined the word “triumphalist,” from the Latin triumphus, public rejoicing for a victory, charging in effect that the Catholic Church thinks it is better than the Protestant churches.
The Catholic Church that Christ instituted and promised to remain with for all eternity, the one that has Christ’s direct authority through the apostolic succession, is better than a church invented by men less than five hundred years ago.
There is a difference between triumphalism and pride. We explain to Protestant and other critics that we are happy and grateful that God called us into the Church that He personally instituted, but we acknowledge that our membership in the Church is entirely a matter of God’s grace and not by any merit of our own. God has given us the grace to distinguish His true Church from the many false churches that surround it.
