Asking a young Catholic to take up a career in the school system is inviting him to martyrdom. But Christ calls us to be martyrs. Teachers in government schools cannot overtly teach the Catholic faith, but there are subtle ways to convey it all the same. They can teach the origin of representative bodies such as Congress and the various Parliaments in the Catholic idea of the dignity of every human being. They can teach the Declaration of Independence, with its appeals to Divine Providence. They can teach the Constitution, using the text itself as the primary source, and the Federalist Papers as the primary source for its interpretation based on the original intent of the framers and the people in whose name it was ratified and whose understanding of its provisions constitutes the “consent of the governed” that gives it moral legitimacy.
