Pray for the United States of America

At this point, it seems certain to me that we are living today in the final confrontation between the forces of good and evil. We who believe that Christ is and should be the organizing principle of our lives and the source of all that we need are in a war against those who believe that government, that is, man, is the organizing principle of our lives and the source of all that we need.

We hear constantly that the present situation is a crisis of confidence. They’re close, but they’re using the language of man. We are living in a crisis of faith. Have you noticed that the world’s governments, desperate to find a solution, tried every idea that came along, except prayer?

Suppose we as a nation decided that Christ would be the organizing principle of our lives and the source of all that we need. Suppose the American bishops asked for an hour of time on all the major cable and on-air channels, and invited all Americans to join them in prayer. Would Christ heal the situation? I don’t know, but I’d like to see the bishops try.
